How to grow bougainvillea in a Dubai garden or on a terrace: sun, watering, soil, pruning, and what to do about leaf drop and caterpillars.

Bougainvillea suits Dubai well: give it full sun, water deeply but not often, and prune after each flush of colour. Most problems come from too much water, not too little. A plant that is stressed slightly flowers more than one that is fed and watered constantly.
Key takeaways
- Plant it in full sun. Six or more hours of direct light is what drives flowering.
- Water deeply and let the top few centimetres of soil dry out between waterings.
- Sandy UAE soil drains well, but it holds little food. Mix compost into the planting hole.
- Prune lightly after each flowering flush. Heavy pruning in the middle of summer sets the plant back.
- Leaf drop after a move, a cold spell or overwatering is common and usually recovers.
How much sun does bougainvillea need in Dubai?
Full sun, all day if possible. A south or west facing wall is fine. In shade it grows long, leafy stems and few flowers. The colourful parts are bracts (modified leaves), and they colour best under strong light.
How often should you water bougainvillea in Dubai?
Newly planted bougainvillea needs regular water for the first few weeks while roots establish. After that, water deeply and then wait. In the Dubai summer, a drip line running for a longer cycle once every few days usually works better than a short daily sprinkle. Early morning is the best time, because water is not lost to midday evaporation.
In winter (November to March) the plant uses much less water. Cut back the frequency and check the soil before each watering. Constantly wet soil in cooler months leads to yellow leaves and root rot.
In a pot on a terrace, the root ball dries out faster than ground soil, so check with a finger a few centimetres down. If it is dry, water until it runs out of the drainage holes.
What soil does bougainvillea like?
Free-draining soil. Native UAE sand drains fast but holds few nutrients and can be salty in places, so deep watering also helps flush salts down past the roots. When planting, mix compost or a planting mix into the sand, and never let the pot or hole sit in water. In pots, use a gritty potting mix with drainage holes and a layer of coarse material at the base.
Feed lightly. A balanced slow-release fertiliser at the start of spring and again in autumn is enough. Too much nitrogen gives leaves instead of flowers.
How do you plant or repot bougainvillea on a terrace?
Bougainvillea flowers well when slightly root-bound, so do not jump to a very large pot. Move up one size when roots circle the pot or push out of the drainage holes. Handle the root ball gently, because the roots are easily damaged. Do it in the cooler months where possible, and water in well afterwards. Wear thick gloves, as the thorns are sharp.
Give climbing types a trellis, wire or wall fixing. Our outdoor plants range includes several colours, such as Bougainvillea Red, Bougainvillea White, Bougainvillea Pink Pixie and Bougainvillea Tall.
How and when should you prune bougainvillea?
Prune after a flush of flowers finishes. Cut back the tips of long stems to a node to encourage side shoots, which carry the next set of flowers. Remove dead, crossing or weak growth at any time. Tidying a hedge or a wall climber a few times a year keeps it manageable. Wear long sleeves and gloves. For large or tall plants, tree trimming is worth handing to a team with the right equipment.
Why are my bougainvillea leaves turning yellow or dropping?
- Overwatering: the most common cause. Let the soil dry between waterings and check drainage.
- Recent move or repotting: some leaf drop is normal for a few weeks.
- Cool nights in winter: leaves can thin out. The plant usually recovers in spring.
- Low light: stems stretch and leaves yellow in shade.
- Caterpillars: the bougainvillea looper can strip leaves quickly. Look for chewed edges and small caterpillars under the leaves, and remove them by hand or ask a garden professional about treatment.
- Aphids, mealybugs and whitefly: look for sticky residue or white cotton-like patches. A strong spray of water can knock many off, repeated over a few weeks.
How big does bougainvillea get?
Large. Left alone, many types climb or sprawl to several metres. Compact and dwarf types stay much smaller and suit pots. Decide early whether you want a climber, a shrub or a clipped hedge, and prune to match.
Who can look after it for you?
If you would rather not manage watering and pruning yourself, our garden maintenance team can help. For setting up a drip line, see irrigation system installation.
