Root Bound

Also known as: pot bound

A plant is root bound when its roots have filled the pot and begun circling or coiling around its edge, usually a sign it needs repotting.

As a plant grows, its root system eventually fills the available space in its container. Once that happens, roots start running along the inside wall of the pot and circling back on themselves instead of branching outward, a pattern that can eventually strangle the plant's own stem if left unaddressed for long enough.

Common signs include roots visible through drainage holes, water running straight through the pot without being absorbed, and the plant drying out much faster than it used to between waterings. Growth often slows even with normal watering and feeding, since a congested root ball can no longer take up water and nutrients efficiently.

The fix is repotting into a container one size up, gently teasing or scoring the outer roots to encourage them to grow outward again rather than continuing to circle. In the UAE's warm climate, plants generally grow and fill a pot faster than in cooler regions, so checking root condition every 12-24 months is a reasonable default for most common houseplants.
