A practical guide to growing date palms in Dubai: sun, deep watering, soil, pruning fronds, and signs of red palm weevil.

A date palm needs full sun, deep and regular watering while it is young, and light pruning of dead fronds only. It is desert-adapted, but a newly planted palm still needs a proper watering routine for the first year or two.
Key takeaways
- Full sun, open space and room for a tall trunk and wide crown.
- Water deeply on a schedule while young. Established palms need less frequent but still deep watering.
- Cut only dead or fully brown fronds. Heavy "haircuts" weaken the tree.
- Check the crown regularly. Oozing, chewed fibre or a collapsing crown can mean red palm weevil.
- Leave a lot of clearance from walls, pools and pipes. Roots and fronds both spread.
How much sun does a date palm need?
Full sun. Date palms are among the most heat-tolerant trees you can plant in the UAE. Choose a spot with open sky above and enough space around it, since mature fronds are long and spiny. Keep it away from walkways, parked cars and low pergolas.
How often should you water a date palm in Dubai?
Young palms are thirsty. In summer, deep water through a drip ring or a bubbler around the base, a few times a week, so water reaches the whole root zone instead of wetting only the surface. Water early in the morning or in the evening. In winter, reduce the frequency, but do not let a young palm dry out completely.
Established palms cope with longer gaps between waterings, but they grow and look better with deep watering on a regular schedule. Drip irrigation on a timer is the practical way to do this. See irrigation system installation if your garden has no system yet.
What soil does a date palm need?
Date palms tolerate sandy soil and a fair amount of salinity compared with most garden plants. Even so, mix compost into the planting hole for a new tree, and make sure water drains away rather than pooling at the trunk base. Deep watering flushes salts down below the roots. A top-up of a palm fertiliser in spring and again in autumn is common practice.
Can you grow a date palm in a pot on a terrace?
Only a small one, and only for a while. A date palm is a large tree and its roots need space. A large container works for a young palm, with good drainage holes and a heavy base. Plan to move it to the ground when it outgrows the pot. Check your building rules about the weight of large planters on balconies.

How do you prune a date palm?
Remove only fronds that are completely dead and brown, plus any that hang low and block access. Cutting green fronds weakens the tree and stresses it. Wear thick gloves and eye protection, since the spines at the base of the fronds are sharp. Tall palms are a job for a trained team with the right equipment, not a ladder in the garden. Our tree trimming service covers this, and you can request a free site visit first.
What causes brown or yellow fronds?
- Underwatering or irregular watering: tips brown first, then whole fronds.
- Overwatering or poor drainage: lower fronds yellow and the crown looks weak.
- Nutrient shortage: yellowing of older fronds can point to a lack of potassium or magnesium. A palm fertiliser can help.
- Salt build-up: brown leaf tips and a crust on the soil. Water deeply to flush it.
- Transplant shock: a recently moved palm may hold back growth for a while.
- Scale insects and mealybugs: look on frond bases for white or brown crusty patches.
What is red palm weevil and what are the warning signs?
Red palm weevil is a serious pest of palms, including date palms, across the Gulf region. The larvae tunnel inside the trunk and crown, so damage is often well advanced before it is seen. General warning signs include:
- brown, sticky fluid oozing from the trunk or crown
- chewed fibre scattered around the base of the fronds
- a sour or fermenting smell
- the centre of the crown drooping, collapsing or turning yellow
- an unusual chewing sound from inside the trunk
If you see any of these, treat it as urgent and get the palm inspected by a plant-health professional straight away. Avoid wounding the trunk when pruning, since fresh cuts can attract the pests.
How big does a date palm get?
Mature date palms are tall trees with long arching fronds, commonly many metres high with a wide crown. Plant with the final size in mind.
