How to grow plumeria (frangipani) in Dubai: full sun, careful watering, fast-draining soil, pruning, winter rest and flowering problems.

Plumeria, also called frangipani, grows well in Dubai with full sun, fast-draining soil and careful watering. It likes heat and drops leaves in the cooler months, which is normal. The usual reasons for no flowers are too little sun, too much water or too much nitrogen fertiliser.
Key takeaways
- Full sun, at least six hours a day, is the first requirement for flowers.
- Let the soil dry between waterings. Wet roots rot the thick stems.
- Leaf drop in winter is normal. Cut back watering while the plant rests.
- Use a gritty, fast-draining mix, especially in pots.
- Prune after flowering or at the end of winter to shape the plant.
How much sun does plumeria need?
Full sun. On a terrace choose the sunniest spot. A plant in shade grows leaves but few flowers. In the intense summer heat, a young plant that has just been moved may benefit from a little protection for the first weeks before full exposure.
How often should you water plumeria in Dubai?
In summer, when the plant is in leaf and flowering, water deeply and then allow the top layer of soil to dry. In hot weather that may mean a few times a week in a pot, and less for a plant in the ground. Early morning watering works best.
In winter, as leaves drop and growth slows, water much less. A bare plumeria in cool weather uses very little, and wet soil at that point leads to rot. Resume regular watering when new leaves appear in spring.
What soil does plumeria like?
Fast-draining soil. Native sandy soil drains well, and improving it with some compost helps the plant settle. In pots, use a gritty mix with extra sand, perlite or small stones, drainage holes and a layer of coarse material at the base. Water deeply now and then to stop salts building up. Feed with a fertiliser that is not too high in nitrogen, such as one marketed for flowering plants, in the growing season.
How do you plant or repot plumeria on a terrace?
Pick a heavy pot just a little bigger than the root ball. Plumeria flowers best when slightly crowded. Repot in spring when new growth starts, handle the thick stems gently and avoid watering heavily right after repotting. Check balcony rules and load limits before placing a large pot.

When and how should you prune plumeria?
Prune after flowering or at the end of the cool season, when growth is about to restart. Cut just above a branching point. Plumeria usually flowers on the tips of branches, so heavy pruning can remove next season's flowers. Use clean tools. Wear gloves and eye protection.
Why is my plumeria not flowering?
- Not enough sun: the most common reason.
- Too much nitrogen: lots of leaves and no buds.
- Overwatering: the plant puts energy into survival rather than flowers.
- Young plant: some plants take a few years to flower.
- Heavy pruning: removing the branch tips takes the flower buds with them.
Why are the leaves turning yellow or dropping?
- Winter dormancy: normal. Reduce watering.
- Overwatering: yellow leaves in the growing season, often with soft stems.
- Underwatering: leaves wilt and fall in a pot during peak summer.
- Spider mites: fine webbing and speckled leaves in hot dry weather. Rinse the leaves and repeat.
- Mealybugs, scale and whitefly: sticky leaves, white patches or tiny flying insects. Wipe off and rinse; repeat over several weeks.
- Rust: orange powdery spots under leaves. Remove affected leaves and avoid wetting the foliage.
How big does plumeria get?
Depends on the type. Many reach the size of a small tree with a rounded crown, while compact types stay smaller. Container growing keeps size down.
