Gazebo

A gazebo's defining feature is a complete, weatherproof roof, which sets it apart from a pergola, whose overhead frame is typically open or slatted and only filters light rather than fully blocking rain and sun. Gazebos are usually open-sided or have partial screening, rather than fully enclosed walls, which keeps them ventilated while still offering full overhead shelter.

Materials are similar to pergolas: aluminium, treated timber, or a composite frame, with the roof itself often a separate weatherproof membrane, tiled panel, or shingled surface. Size and shape are flexible, from a compact garden feature to a structure large enough for outdoor dining.

In a climate with an intense midday sun for much of the year, a gazebo's continuous overhead shade, rather than a pergola's filtered light, is the main practical reason to choose one over the other for a seating or dining area that needs to stay usable at any time of day.
