Pergola

A pergola is an outdoor structure of vertical posts supporting an open or slatted overhead frame, used to partially shade a patio, walkway, or seating area.

Unlike a solid roof, a pergola's overhead frame is typically open, slatted, or covered in a climbing plant, so it filters sunlight rather than blocking it entirely. That makes it distinct from a gazebo, which usually has a fully enclosed, solid roof, and from a shade sail, which is a single stretched fabric membrane rather than a framed structure.

Common materials are aluminium, timber, and steel, each with a different balance of cost, lifespan, and maintenance. A bioclimatic or louvred pergola adds motorised roof slats that rotate open or closed, turning it into a structure that can go from full shade to full sun, or close up like a roof in rain.

In UAE conditions, material choice affects lifespan more than in milder climates: intense, near-constant summer UV degrades untreated wood and some polymer roof panels faster than in temperate regions, which is why powder-coated aluminium and treated hardwood are the two materials most commonly specified for pergolas here.
