Ground Cover

Ground cover plants spread horizontally rather than growing upright, filling gaps between larger shrubs and trees or covering an entire bed on their own. Beyond the visual effect, a full ground cover layer shades the soil surface, which keeps it cooler and slows moisture loss compared with bare, exposed soil.

A dense ground cover also suppresses weeds simply by outcompeting them for light and space, reducing how much manual weeding a bed needs over time. Many ground covers spread by runners or self-seeding, so a small planting can fill in a bed within one or two growing seasons.

Species suited to Dubai and Sharjah gardens include lantana, portulaca, and vinca rosea, chosen for tolerating full sun and heat with comparatively little water once established. Cool-season ground covers common in temperate gardens generally aren't viable here through summer.
