Softscaping

Softscape covers everything in a garden that grows and changes over time: lawn, trees, shrubs, hedges, ground cover, and seasonal planting. It's usually planned in tandem with hardscape, since paths, walls, and drainage all need to account for where roots, shade, and irrigation lines will eventually sit.

In hot, arid conditions, softscape design leans heavily on species selection: plants suited to the local climate need far less water and maintenance than imported ornamentals chosen for looks alone. Native and naturalised species such as ghaf, sidr, and bougainvillea are common choices precisely because they establish and survive with comparatively little irrigation once mature.

A garden's long-term water and maintenance cost is driven far more by softscape choices, plant density, and irrigation design, than by the hardscape it surrounds.
