Smart Irrigation Controller

A standard irrigation timer runs the same schedule every day regardless of conditions. A smart controller instead uses evapotranspiration data, forecast, or on-site sensors to lengthen or shorten watering automatically, skipping cycles after rain or on cooler, more humid days and increasing run-time through a heatwave.

Most models connect to home WiFi and are managed through a phone app, which also makes it straightforward to adjust multiple zones, set seasonal baseline schedules, and get an alert if a zone is drawing far more or less water than expected, often the first sign of a broken line or a stuck valve.

In a climate with a long, intense summer and a short, milder winter, the seasonal adjustment is the main practical benefit: a controller shifts a garden from a light winter schedule to a much heavier summer one automatically, rather than relying on someone to remember to reprogram it as temperatures climb.
