Heat- and drought-tolerant plants
Start with plants that already cope with dry air and strong sun. Trees, palms and succulents are the usual backbone of an arid Dubai garden, and grouping plants by how much water they need keeps irrigation simple (this is called hydrozoning).
These outdoor plants are published in our shop and are commonly used in dry-climate gardens:
- Ghaf Tree
- Date Palm
- Washingtonia Palm
- Olive Tree 2m
- Neem Tree
- Acacia Tree
- Bougainvillea Red
- Desert Rose
- Aloe Vera
- Barrel Cactus
Browse the full range in outdoor plants, or ask us to match plants to your sun, soil and water access through plants and trees installation. Newly planted trees and shrubs still need regular watering while they establish, so plan the irrigation at the same time as the planting.
Irrigation for a desert climate
Use drip for beds, hedges and trees, and sprinklers only for lawn, each on its own zone. Drip puts water at the root zone with far less evaporation and wind loss than spraying it through the air, which matters most in the hottest, windiest months.
UAE mains water carries more dissolved minerals than water in many other regions, so drip emitters can clog over time. Periodic flushing or filter cleaning keeps them delivering their rated flow.
A smart irrigation controller can lengthen or shorten watering using weather data or on-site sensors, moving a garden from a light winter schedule to a heavier summer one without reprogramming. Summer demand is far higher than winter, so check emitters and timers before the hot months start.

Shade: pergolas and trees
Shade makes a Dubai garden usable in summer, and it also cools the surfaces and soil beneath it. A pergola gives shade straight away, while trees take time to grow but add a living canopy. Many gardens use both: a pergola over the seating area and trees to soften the rest of the plot.
See aluminum pergolas and plants and trees installation. Shade from a villa, pergola or mature trees also narrows the heat gap between artificial and natural grass.
Natural grass or artificial grass
Choose natural grass for sun-exposed lawns used daily by kids or pets, and artificial grass for shaded or purely decorative areas. Many Dubai villa owners use both, keeping the water-hungry surface only where it earns its place.
| Factor | Natural grass | Artificial grass |
|---|---|---|
| Water use | Ongoing water bill; a zoned drip and sprinkler system keeps this down versus blanket spraying | None for the surface itself; only occasional rinsing |
| Heat in direct summer sun | Cools itself through evapotranspiration, so it stays walkable barefoot | No cooling mechanism; surface can get very hot in direct summer sun |
| Maintenance | Weekly mowing in the growing season, fertilizing, weeding, irrigation upkeep | Rinsing every 2 to 4 weeks, monthly brushing, edge weed control, infill top-up around year five |
| Best suited to | Sun-exposed lawns used daily by kids or pets barefoot | Shaded areas, rooftops, decorative strips and low-water-access sites |

Putting it together
The plant list, irrigation zones, shade and surfaces all affect each other, so they work best planned together. Our landscape design service does that for a new plot, and garden maintenance keeps an established garden on track through the summer.
