Pots, planters and artificial grass are usually allowed on Dubai balconies, but each building sets its own rules. Here is what we know and what we couldn't find.

In our experience, pots, planters and artificial grass on a Dubai balcony or terrace are usually allowed. But each building sets its own rules under Law 6 of 2019, so check with building management first. We found no official rule on planter weight, drilling or artificial grass.
Checked 16 October 2026. Rules and fees change, so confirm with your developer before you book any work.
Key takeaways
- Pots, planters and artificial grass are usually allowed on balconies and terraces.
- Each building's own rules apply under Law 6 of 2019.
- Reported rules: no water running onto other balconies and no unauthorised attachments.
- A Nakheel fine of AED 2,000 for unauthorised attachments has been reported in the news.
- No official rule found on planter weight, drilling or artificial grass.
- Green Beetle doesn't apply for approvals. If your building asks for one, the owner applies.
Can you keep plants on a balcony in Dubai?
Usually, yes. Pots and planters are normally fine. Each building's own rules apply under Law 6 of 2019. Ask for the building's house rules or a copy of the community guide.
What rules are reported in the news?
Two keep coming up. First, water must not run onto neighbouring balconies, so use saucers and don't over-water. Second, you shouldn't add unauthorised attachments to the building, such as planters hung on railings or fixed to the facade. A Nakheel fine of AED 2,000 has been reported. We haven't seen the primary source, so treat it as reported.
Is artificial grass allowed on a balcony?
In our experience it is usually allowed. We found no official rule on artificial grass on balconies, so ask management, especially if you plan to glue it down or fix it.
What about planter weight and drilling?
We found no official rule on planter weight or on drilling into balcony walls and floors. Large planters of wet soil are heavy and can affect drainage, so ask management before you use big ones. Don't drill without written permission.
What plants cope with Dubai balconies?
Dubai summer heat and direct sun are hard on potted plants, so keep pots watered, with a saucer so water doesn't spill onto other balconies. Browse outdoor plants and pots and planters in our shop.
Do you need a NOC on a balcony?
Usually not for pots and planters. Anything fixed to the structure, such as a green wall or built-in planter, is a different matter and building management will want to approve it. See green walls and planters boxes. For villas, read garden work permission in Dubai.
